Assistant Instructor

Roy grew up splitting time between Salem, Massachusetts and Laguna Beach, California. On both coasts, the ocean has played a significant role in his life. Summers were spent with his father, frequently on trips to Baja Mexico, where he taught Roy many skills in the water... How to fish, freedive, and surf. As a teenager, Roy's hobby of freedive spearfishing turned into an obsession. When he wasn't in class, he was in the water whenever the conditions permitted. In an effort to further his knowledge about the sea and pursue a livelihood from it, Roy attended the California Maritime Academy where he earned a degree in Marine Transportation and a 3rd Mate's unlimited license. While in college, Roy became great friends with a few watermen who shared his same passion for freediving. Together, they pushed each other to improve and began traveling to more remote places with whatever funds the crew could scrape up. Roy started doing well in local and national level spearfishing competitions, including a 1st place team finish in the 2013 US National Spearfishing Championship. Since graduating in 2010, Roy has been working on large commercial ships all over the world with the benefit of having 6 months out of the year off to pursue his dreams and freedive. He still spends a fair bit of time in Californian and New England waters, but what truly thrills him is traveling to new places, experiencing different cultures and freediving with friends. His sponsors include The Freedive Shop, Pelagic Gear, and Sea Sniper. Having been personally trained and certified by FII founder and 13 time world record holder Martin Stepanek, Roy's goal is to assist new and seasoned divers alike gain knowledge, increase comfort in the water, and become more efficient freedivers with safety being the primary objective. He is available to travel to instruct courses, if you have a specific location in mind, please contact him with any questions regarding scheduling a class
